For BHP, the first material decision is not a tailings-market idea. It is governance. A tailings stream is a safety, geochemistry, water, closure and liability system before it is ever a secondary-material candidate.
BHP's current reporting hub publishes its 2026 Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management public disclosure, Tailings Storage Facility Policy Statement and ESG Databook. Its sustainability materials refer to asset-specific disclosures and tailings management. Those sources do not establish that any tailings stream is available, chemically suitable, permitted for reuse or transferable to an outside party.
