Campbell's transition problem sits at the seam between food loss and packaging. A package cannot be called better because it uses less material if it raises product loss, and a food-waste claim is empty until the plant stream has a safe destination. The credible first lane is one shelf-stable format, one filling line and one residual stream.
Campbell's 2024 ESG goals and performance report states goals to reduce absolute food waste 50% by fiscal 2030 versus fiscal 2017, reduce landfill waste 25% by fiscal 2025 versus fiscal 2017, and transition in-scope packaging to recyclable or industrially compostable designs and materials by calendar 2030. The same document lists packaging metrics by material. Public reporting does not establish a named plant, food-grade recycled-content specification, waste-feedstock agreement or recovery offtake.

Food-contact and shelf-life requirements limit which recycled or redesigned materials can move into a given package.
Public targets and aggregate metrics do not identify a packaging converter, plant, product specification, collection route or buyer for recovered material.
Campbell's public goals point in the right direction, but the first real decision is smaller: a single product line where food protection, packaging design and the plant's residual stream can be measured in the same system.
